Garmin Instinct 2 and Instinct 2S Review: The Ultimate Rugged Budget GPS Watches

When it comes to outdoor GPS watches, Garmin’s Instinct series has built a strong reputation for toughness, reliability, and outdoor-specific functionality. The Garmin Instinct 2 and Garmin Instinct 2S continue this legacy, packing enhanced features, improved battery life, and advanced fitness tracking into a lightweight yet rugged design.

Whether you're a trail runner, hiker, cyclist, or someone who just loves the great outdoors, these GPS watches are built to withstand the elements while offering smartwatch features, fitness tracking, and precise GPS navigation—all in one device.

What’s New? Key Upgrades from the Original Instinct

The Instinct 2 series builds on the success of the first-generation Garmin Instinct and Instinct Solar, keeping all the best aspects while introducing several major improvements:

Sharper Display: The Instinct 2 has a 176 x 176-pixel resolution, while the Instinct 2S offers 156 x 156 pixels—a noticeable upgrade from the original’s 128 x 128 pixels.

New Compact Option: The Instinct 2S features a smaller 40mm bezel (versus 45mm on the standard Instinct 2), catering to those who prefer a lighter, more compact design.

Extended Battery Life: The solar models offer unlimited battery life in smartwatch mode under optimal sunlight exposure.

Advanced Health Metrics: New features include VO2 Max, Sleep Score, Fitness Age, and Women’s Health Tracking.

Multisport Support: Finally, triathletes can rejoice! The Instinct 2 now includes a multisport mode, making it a great option for triathlons, duathlons, and endurance sports.

Garmin Pay (Solar Models Only): Contactless payments for quick purchases without needing your phone or wallet.

Durability & Build: Ready for Any Adventure

Both the Instinct 2 and Instinct 2S maintain the rugged, military-grade durability that made the original Instinct a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts:

  • 100m Water Resistance – Ready for swimming, kayaking, and other watersports.
  • MIL-STD-810 Rating – Resistant to shock, thermal stress, and extreme conditions.
  • Scratch-Resistant Corning® Gorilla® Glass – Built to handle rugged terrain without worrying about screen damage.
  • Comfortable & Lightweight – Instinct 2: 52g, Instinct 2S: 42g, with soft silicone straps.

Battery Life: Game-Changer for Long Adventures

Garmin has significantly improved battery life, particularly with the Solar models:

Model Smartwatch Mode GPS Mode Solar Mode (with 3hrs daily sunlight at 50,000 lux)
Instinct 2 Up to 28 days Up to 30 hours Unlimited in smartwatch mode, up to 48hrs GPS
Instinct 2 Solar Unlimited Up to 48 hours Unlimited in smartwatch mode, extended GPS life
Instinct 2S Up to 21 days Up to 22 hours Up to 51 days in smartwatch mode, 28hrs GPS
Instinct 2S Solar Up to 51 days Up to 28 hours Even longer GPS tracking times

This makes the Instinct 2 Solar one of the longest-lasting GPS watches available today—ideal for multi-day expeditions.

Navigation & Outdoor Features: Built for Exploration

Both watches are packed with navigation tools, making them perfect for hikers, mountain bikers, and trail runners.

GPS, GLONASS & Galileo

The Instinct 2 & 2S support multiple GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems), improving accuracy in challenging environments like forests, mountains, and canyons.

Trackback & Waypoint Navigation

  • Trackback Routing: Retrace your steps back to your starting point.
  • Mark Waypoints: Save important locations like campsites, trailheads, or emergency points.
  • Follow a Course: Upload GPX routes and follow them on-screen with real-time distance and ETA updates.

ABC Sensors

  • Altimeter: Tracks elevation changes.
  • Barometer: Monitors weather changes.
  • 3-Axis Compass: Provides accurate direction, even when stationary.

These features make the Instinct 2 one of the best GPS watches for off-grid adventures.

Sports & Fitness Features: Now with Multisport Mode!

The Instinct 2 series now supports triathlon and multisport tracking, a game-changer for endurance athletes. Other new training features include:

🏃 VO2 Max – Estimates your fitness level based on heart rate and pace.
💪 Recovery Time – Tells you how long to rest before your next hard workout.
🚴 MTB Dynamics – Measures Grit & Flow to analyze mountain bike rides.
🧘 Yoga, Pilates, Strength, and More – New sport modes for varied training.
🔥 Intensity Minutes – Tracks how much vigorous activity you complete daily.

Smart Features: Garmin Pay & Notifications

While it’s primarily an outdoor and fitness watch, the Instinct 2 does include smartwatch features:

📩 Smart Notifications – Get calls, texts, and alerts from your phone.
💳 Garmin Pay (Solar Models Only) – Contactless payments for quick purchases.
🎨 Connect IQ Store – Customize watch faces and download apps.

However, if you want music storage or maps, you'll need to look at Garmin's Fenix or Epix series instead.

Health & Wellness Tracking

Garmin has added several advanced health tracking features to the Instinct 2 & 2S:

🛌 Sleep Score & Advanced Sleep Monitoring – Now viewable directly on the watch.
🌬️ Respiration Tracking – Monitors breathing patterns.
❤️ Pulse Ox Sensor – Measures blood oxygen levels, useful for high-altitude training.
🚺 Women’s Health Tracking – Log menstrual cycles or pregnancy symptoms via Garmin Connect.
⚖️ Fitness Age – Estimates if your body is younger or older than your real age.

These features help users monitor recovery, stress, and overall well-being—perfect for athletes and adventurers alike.

Safety & Tracking Features

If paired with your smartphone, the Instinct 2 includes Garmin’s emergency features:

🆘 Incident Detection – Alerts emergency contacts if you take a hard fall.
📍 LiveTrack – Lets friends & family track your location in real-time.

⚠️ Note: These require a phone with network coverage; the watch itself doesn’t have cellular connectivity.

Who Should Buy the Garmin Instinct 2 & 2S?

✔️ Best for:
✅ Hikers, backpackers & off-grid explorers.
✅ Ultra runners & endurance athletes needing long battery life.
✅ Mountain bikers & trail runners who want GPS & activity tracking.

Final Verdict: Should You Buy It?

Great GPS functionality - locks on quickly. Suunto coach comes free with the app and has AI training plans, so, you don’t have to subscribe to such things separately. Battery life is great.

Customer photo review of Garmin GPSMAP H1

I bought the GPSMAP H1 online but picked it up from the Office in Northumberland as I was on holiday in the area a few days after I ordered it. I spoke with Jon, a really helpful and friendly guy. The staff at the office were good too. This device is really great. It came with some helpful documentation printed off by the shop. To get the best out of it use Garmin express and Garmin base map on either a Mac or a Windows computer. However, setting up your own courses on screen is fairly simple too. The preloaded maps are perfectly good, but if you want Ordnance survey maps there's a slot for an SD card. You can switch the touch screen off which is dead handy if you want to keep it in your pack or pocket whilst walking. The pictures I have attached show a course I did on screen. Also a bearing on the Humber Bridge. Apols for the quality but I needed three hands really. Overall I'm delighted. It's a complex thing so if you haven't had one before, take a couple of hours to mess about with it before going out and field test it on a walk you're familiar with.

Bought the H1 GPS with the additional 1.5 maps . Arrived all checked over with card installed and set up for me. Thanks guys. Delivery was fast , works great straight out the box and can’t fault the service. The H1 works great after familiarise myself around the menu options. Took it out with me, for a test on a local walk. After I’d loaded up a route into it from Garmin explore app. Works great, very impressed with the touch screen feature . Added a screen protector and silicon soft case, for some extra protection . 😊

I had a Montana before this which was good but this is much better in that it has buttons and it’s more compact. The service from Outdoor GPS is also worth a mention as they were outstanding.

Loving the Garmin GPSMAP67, I could not believe anything could have suck good battery life, Wow!

Garmin GPSMap 67

First use today on a 58 cycle ride. Love it, much clearer screen then the 600 it has replaced. Map updates were a challenge as they were not visible after update. Had to uninstall and reinstall to fix the problem.

Garmin Montana 710

Replaced Garmin Montana 700 series. Like the big screen but chunky and heavy.

Garmin Fenix 8 – 43 mm, AMOLED - Sapphire

I was not very happy with the detail of the 1:50k maps, so I upgraded to the 1:25k. Even though it is much more expensive I am very glad I did, as I am a bit "OCD" about detail. The detail of the 1:25k shows things as they actually would appear from the air, rather than just the vague blobs reproduced by the 1:50k. I suppose it depends on what you want and what you use the maps for - I like the better accuracy of the 1:25k which I feel is more trustworthy and gives me a better feel of where I am, and what I can expect to see both of my surroundings and on the ground.

I initially found this difficult to get to grips with, the problem being that I've been used to using a Dakota 20 for the last 10 years. However, now that I've had it outside and used it in anger, I must say its a big step up! I've spent some time setting it up as I want it (in some regard similar to the Dak20) but it's so customise- able, it just took time to work it out. Reading the manual was a big help!! I use Memory Map to upload my traces and the GPS 67 doesn't interface with it in the same that the Dakota did, which was a bit of a curve ball for me at first. It turns out though that the solution is just different not worse. All in all, now that I'm a bit more used to it I like it a lot. I'd have to say that I highly recommend this unit.

Garmin GPSMap 67i

Great service - the Inreach mini 3 arrived really quickly. I’ve only managed to use it once but it was great and I was able to keep in touch with my partner while I was out hiking. Will keep on playing with it as I’m going to use it in Nepal 🇳🇵 in November.

Garmin inReach Mini 3 Plus

Great service. Prompt delivery with regular updates. The product is perfect after some early mistakes (Garmin your instructions are poor and it’s 3rd party YouTube that gets you sorted) it’s ideal for my needs in the Scottish Borders on my own with my Falcons miles from Signal.

Garmin inReach Messenger

Bit apprehensive with the cost but after getting one don't know how i on without one. Easy to use and learn just clicking buttons and screen soon learnt how to use it

Garmin GPSMAP H1

The Garmin 65s is a reliable workhorse of a GPS. I’ve used earlier models and I’m glad to say this one is still very robust and simple to use, once you’ve spent a bit of time playing around. It’s currently earning its keep in the far north of the Nordic region, in pretty wet and rugged conditions. The service from Outdoor GPS Shop was second to none. Highly recommended.
