FAQs
1. Does this unit come with batteries?
Yes, it comes with a Lithium-ion battery pack
2. What is the difference between the Montana 700, Montana 750 and 750i?
The Montana 750 includes an 8MP camera – for high resolution geotagged pictures and the Montana 750i comes with built in two way satellite communication
3. What are each of the map options available with this unit?
– With Topo Active Maps
This comes with Garmin Topo active maps for 47 countries in Europe. Features topographic coverage for : Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia (Kaliningrad only), San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom and the Vatican City.
If you already have an Ordnance Survey map card (micro SD) from another Garmin GPS, you could put it in this unit.
– With TOPO Great Britain Pro 1:50k – also comes pre-loaded with Topo active Maps (as above)
This is full GB at 1:50k mapping on a map card, which sits in the back of the GPS unit.
The TOPO PRO means that it is the latest map card from Garmin, giving you off road turn by turn routing within the National Parks, this means you can select a location many miles ahead and the GPS will route you via the footpaths to get to that location (like a car sat nav does).
Outside National Parks the GPS will navigate you in a straight line from waypoint to waypoint.
Don’t worry, here at the Outdoor GPS Shop we set the unit up for you so you can easily use these features and we even include a quick start guide so you can quickly get up and running with your GPS unit.
– With TOPO Great Britain Pro 1:25k – also comes pre-loaded with Topo active Maps (as above)
This is full GB at 1:50k, 1:50k and 1:250k mapping on a map card, which sits in the back of the GPS unit. As you zoom in and out you pass through each of these three map sets.

This is an initial review as I have only recently bought this unit. I have used it in test mode several times but once on a five mile country walk in persistent heavy drizzle using a planned route transferred from my PC. It responded very quickly to changes of location as I recorded the track and entered waypoints.
It is an expensive GPS true, and I should say that it is a heavy piece of kit compared with other units I have owned, but the screen size and backlight make it very easy to see and use. The rugged rubberised exterior gives a reassuring solid feel that should stand much punishment.
Outdoor GPS Shop/GPS Training set up the unit with their preferred choices prior to shipping it to me and installed the OS 1:50000 maps that I purchased and it arrived with detailed notes for initial use. Excellent service and their training videos for this unit are very simple, short and easy to assimilate.
I have yet to find any drawbacks ( the weight possibly?) with the unit but some kind of carabiner to attach it to my backpack or belt would be a good idea. I don’t see a suitable one yet.
Menu choices are extensive and easy to navigate making the unit very intuitive to use form the outset.

I’m very pleased with the Outdoor shop and my new Garmin Montana 700. As promised, the shop sent the unit the same day (– Royal mail took an extra day to deliver it however – the special delivery service is running a bit slower at present). I’ve been using a Montana 600 for many years so am familiar with the controls and Basecamp on PC. I’m very pleased with it. It is larger and a bit heavier than the 600 but not excessive and I chose it partly as it has the excellent 5inch screen. It looks and feels rugged and well made, a premium product. The outdoor shop set up the options pre-despatch, which worked well and is well worthwhile, especially for anyone unfamiliar with such devices – my thanks to the shop experts. It also ensures that the unit is in full working order. The Outdoor shop sent several pages of instructions which are also very clear and helpful, much better than the Garmin start-up guide. The full manual can be downloaded from Garmin. Like the previous units, there is no case so I got one that fits well from a local luggage shop. The built in topo maps look nice and are up to date with my local new roads etc. but for outdoors my preference is OS. I have transferred the micro SD card from my 600 and the OS 1:50k works fine – this slows the scrolling response down a bit, looks good though. The battery has plenty of capacity for my purposes, but note that to use the 3xAA facility an adaptor is needed. I’ve used it a few times outdoors and it works perfectly, the map display, track recording and trip details page all work well and look great, just need a bit of practice and experimentation. It interfaces with Basecamp and using the facilities for wifi / Bluetooth plus apps Garmin express, connect and explore. It is possible to move a recorded track from the unit via explore to Basecamp on your PC without plugging it in, but its still easier to simply plug in the USB lead and move track files around as convenient.

Way over the top for what we need – it’s just nice to have the best though! Haven’t had chance to use it much yet, but when we did, we found the screen to be excellent – easy to zoom out and see yourself in a wider context which wasn’t easy on our little old etrex. Still a lot to learn about it – but initial impressions all good.

Had the unit 2 weeks and spent time setting up and connecting with mobile phone and PC. The unit is very solid, good quality large detailed screen (main reason for selecting this unit) so makes reading information easy for my poor old eyes. There are lots of options and settings although the unit was supplied with the OS maps SD card fitted and set up. Service and delivery excellent so well done outdoorgps people.
Use of TOPO maps, OS maps and ability to download Birdseye view (satellite image) with zooming is easy to know exactly where you are.
There’s lots to learn but that’s part of the fun….

I bought it for motorbike green lanes. The display will last over 8 hours on the battery if the brightness is turned down. It’s very clear and easy to zoom or move around with gloves on.

A great device, slightly bigger than I had anticipated

I purchased this Montana 700 as an upgrade to an older and slower Montana 610 with a smaller screen. I also have a very small Garmin Etrex which is my pocket backup. I use the 700 purely for marine mapping on the sea in a 4m Zodiac with a genuine Garmin Bluechart card. The 700 screen is more responsive than the old 610 and a worthwhile amount larger/brighter. I mount it with the holder part of the Garmin cycle mount kit bolted to a RAM brand ball and stem base which can be set at any angle. The 700 is exceptionally rugged which suits the small open boat environment.
The 700 saves me running a 12v separate battery setup which many marine GPS plotters need. The 700’s integral battery lasts a good two days out and I bought the AA battery pack too for backup.
I am experienced with the operation of the Garmin handheld GPS units using marine charts and find the 700 a small step up in every way from previous units. However be warned if you’ve never used one they are still quite sluggish getting around the menus etc compared to a current smartphone, some folks find that a little frustrating but for me it’s a small price to pay for their other benefits.
