Outdoor GPS Shop – The expert’s view
The Garmin GPSMAP 66s is currently the best button GPS unit from Garmin.
Launched in late 2018 it took the GPS world by storm, as it was the first button GPS unit to have the same size screen as the Garmin Oregon range.
It is currently the only Garmin GPS unit to work alongside the Garmin Explore app, which, going forward, will be the way things are progressing.
Too many features to list but it has everything you could ever ask for.
With this end of the market you really should be putting Ordnance Survey maps on this GPS so please choose the 1:50k or 1:25k mapping option.
The best four-season GPS unit from Garmin, by a long way.

Navigate your next outdoor adventure with the GPSMAP 66 series. Whether you’re hiking, mountain biking, climbing, geocaching, kayaking or working in outdoor environments, you can explore more with this iconic rugged handheld with a 3″ colour display. It offers a new quality of positioning with Quad-Helix antenna performance and multi-satellite support as well as wireless connectivity for Active Weather, direct downloads and Garmin Explore compatibility.
Get your Bearings
In addition to multi-GNSS support, the GPSMAP 66 series provides ABC (altimeter, barometer and compass) sensor capabilities to track your journey. The built-in altimeter provides elevation data to accurately monitor ascent and descent, while the barometer can be used to predict weather changes by showing short-term trends in air pressure. The three-axis electronic compass keeps your bearing whether you’re moving or not.
See Where You’re Headed
Get a better picture of your location with high-resolution photo-realistic views of your route, thanks to direct-to-device downloads of BirdsEye satellite imagery — without an annual subscription. You’ll see a true representation of your surroundings to find trails, trailheads and clearings for campsites, to find parks and parking for geocaching, and even to create waypoints based on landmarks.
Stay Tuned to Conditions
You’ll always stay informed of weather conditions when you pair your GPSMAP 66 series device via Bluetooth® to a compatible smartphone. Receive Active Weather updates for real-time forecast information, including predictive maps for temperature, wind, precipitation and clouds. It also provides live weather radar so you’re aware of inclement weather that can affect your outdoor adventures.
Find Your Cache
GPSMAP 66s and GPSMAP 66st devices make it easier than ever to enjoy your geocaching experience. Set it to automatically update with all the latest caches from Geocaching Live, including cache descriptions, logs and hints. With a Wi-Fi® connection or through Garmin Connect™ on a compatible smartphone, you’ll avoid manually entering coordinates or printing out cache details on paper — and each find will automatically upload to your Geocaching.com profile.
Explore With Garmin
Even when you’re offline and have no mobile connection, the GPSMAP 66 series pairs with the Garmin Explore mobile app to let you plan, review and sync data, including waypoints, routes and tracks. Plus, you can review completed activities while still in the field, even when you’re off the grid. Once you’re home again, plan for future trips and review previous activities from the Garmin Explore website.
Utility in Adverse Environments
Be prepared for the most extreme adventures. The GPSMAP 66 series offers up to 16 hours of battery life in GPS standard mode and 1 week in expedition mode (with two AA batteries) for fewer charges. It provides an LED flashlight and SOS beacon that can be used to signal for help. It’s built to military standards for thermal, shock and water performance (MIL-STD-810G), and it’s even compatible with night vision goggles.

FAQs
1. Does this unit come with batteries?
No, but it just requires x2 AA batteries. We would recommend some good quality rechargeable batteries, as it will use a set every day.
2. What is the difference between the GPSMap 66s and the GPSMap 66st?
The GPSMap 66st comes pre-loaded with Garmin’s TopoActive European maps.
3. What are each of the map options available with this unit?
– GPS Unit Only
The map page will be blank on this unit unless you put a map card in the unit, or you download some mapping using a Birdseye Plus voucher.
If you already have an Ordnance Survey map card (micro SD) from another Garmin GPS, you could put it in this unit.
– With TOPO Great Britain Pro 1:50k
This is full GB at 1:50k mapping on a map card, which sits in the back of the GPS unit.
The TOPO PRO means that it is the latest map card from Garmin, giving you off road turn by turn routing within the National Parks, this means you can select a location many miles ahead and the GPS will route you via the footpaths to get to that location (like a car sat nav does).
Outside National Parks the GPS will navigate you in a straight line from waypoint to waypoint.
Don’t worry, here at the Outdoor GPS Shop we set the unit up for you so you can easily use these features and we even include a quick start guide so you can quickly get up and running with your GPS unit.
– With TOPO Great Britain Pro 1:25k
This is full GB at 1:50k, 1:50k and 1:250k mapping on a map card, which sits in the back of the GPS unit. As you zoom in and out you pass through each of these three map sets.

Simon Brown –
Had the GPSMAP66s for about a year nor, upgraded from my previous 64s.
Really like the larger clearer screen and also the connectivity to my smartphone so i can bury that away in the bottom of my rucksack on a wet day and get all the phone notifications on my GPS screen.
Great unit.
David Jeans –
Excellent! Still have a lot to learn but so far I am very impressed with quality and build of the unit and Although not being very technically minded I have found it quite easy to master the basics
Was not to sure about purchasing online but am so glad I did.
Catherine Banks –
Excellent unit. Improvement from my previos unit the Garmin GPSMAP 62S. Bigger screen. Easier menu enabling better access to functions.
Henry Conner –
Had the Garmin 64s to test before I bought this one (66s) I am very satisfied with it. Very good satellite connection and that even in the hpuse without interruptions. What the predecessor, unfortunately, did not succeed. Very suitable for geocaching and hiking. Geocaching app is already integrated in the device, which allows you to select everything. Routes can be transferred via Bluetooth to the device as a GPX file (Android), as well as via PC. Synchronisation of routes, or tracks also works very well. Use Garmin’s own software for this. Personally use the device for hiking and geocaching. During hiking it was important to me that the route is recorded and that you can archive it on the PC with all important information such as time, miles and altitude difference.

I did try the unit few times now, hiking in the Lake District. It did work without any problems, with the display really clearly readable under sunny conditions. GPS accuracy was always around 2 m, and full signal. Operations on this unit are not straightforward as there are plenty of functions or options. It is a complex unit after all, but it’s easy to start with and the more you use it the more you get acquaintance with the functions. The software (v 4.2) seems stable, i did not have any reboot or sudden shut downs, as often happened with previous software versions from what i read. Battery, for my experience, lasts around 12 hours using eneloop 1900. So I guess with the eneloop PRO 2500 you can get close to the declared 16h. I am using only Open Street Maps, and for now i had no problems at all. The paths I did were well mapped, shops/POI all present, and position was accurate, both in the Lakes and around my area (Lancashire). I miss the “beauty” of the Ordnance Survey, and the more detailed geological features in there. But I also feel I can save the money, especially if you are considering the 1:25k, and go and support the Open source community (as long as you bring a paper map with you as well for safety). Operations via buttons is easy, and I don’t miss touch operations, although I must say buttons often have a squeaking sound while pressing them (at least on my unit). Overall, very satisfied, and looking forward to use the unit at its full potential.

The unit is good, but the Topo maps are very disappointing. Although obvipously based on OS maps, the colours are wishy washy and the resolution poor compared to my previous OS maps. Contours, paths, etc are much harder to make out.
Andrew S. (verified owner) –
A good upgrade from my old Etrex30, bigger screen is great, but the user interface is still less than perfect.
Pete Hammond (verified owner) –
Easy to use, clear interface and comes with a really helpful Outdoor GPS user guide.

Being competent with Garmin Gps units I decided to go back to the button unit after years of very good touch screens. This unit is faster to operate also with gloves. This item is top notch and easy to operate.

Outstanding upgrade to my previous Oregon GPS. Gets satellite signals very quickly and holds onto them even indoors. Much prefer the physical buttons to the touch screen Oregon, which was awful in the wet and liable to turn itself off at any moment. Excellent product and well worth the money. If only the same could be said for Garmin Topo 1:25,000 maps!

My old GPS62S was getting a bit battered, a good upgrade.

A very comprehensive gps unit, loads of features and a rugged construction.

Nice piece of kit – ideal to have the 1:25k OS mapping. Great improvement over the old 60CSx (with just basic Topo mapping) that it replaces.
