The Garmin GPSMAP65s is a great budget button GPS unit from Garmin.
It is an updated version of the Garmin GPSMAP64sx with multi-band/ multi-GNSS handheld with sensors. It also works alongside the Garmin Explore app so you can transfer routes/ tracks directly onto this unit without the use of a PC/ Mac
It comes with a built-in electronic compass; this gives you far greater accuracy at small movements and it also has an altimeter that works from the air pressure (giving you improved accuracy).
If you can afford it with the 1:50k Topo Great Britain Pro map card it is a great addition as you then get full GB Ordnance Survey maps on this unit.

FAQs
1. What are each of the map options available with this unit?
– GPS Unit Only
The map page will be blank on this unit unless you put a map card in the unit, or you download some mapping using a Birdseye Plus voucher.
If you already have an Ordnance Survey map card (micro SD) from another Garmin GPS, you could put it in this unit.
– With TOPO Great Britain Pro 1:50k
This is full GB at 1:50k mapping on a map card, which sits in the back of the GPS unit.
The TOPO PRO means that it is the latest map card from Garmin, giving you off road turn by turn routing within the National Parks, this means you can select a location many miles ahead and the GPS will route you via the footpaths to get to that location (like a car sat nav does).
Outside National Parks the GPS will navigate you in a straight line from waypoint to waypoint.
Don’t worry, here at the Outdoor GPS Shop we set the unit up for you so you can easily use these features and we even include a quick start guide so you can quickly get up and running with your GPS unit.
2. Does this unit come with batteries?
No, but it just requires x2 AA batteries. We would recommend some good quality rechargeable batteries, as it will use a set every day.
3. What is the difference between the GPSMap 65 and 65s?
The GPSMap 65s includes a barometric altimeter, 3-axis compass and wireless connectivity.

The 65s replaced my existing 60 Csx and it has so far proved very competent and stable. The built in Topo map has sufficient detail to be helpful in the wild.

I knew what I was ordering. It’s pretty much the same as the 62s that it replaces with more accuracy and features. I’m happy with it. Tough call re. 65 vs 66. Ultimately the 62, 64, 65 is a winning formula. Map screen went blank yesterday and came back when I switched unit off and back on again. Recently introduced unit so I expect later firmware updates will fix.

Initial local walks show that this GPS is very accurate and I am pleased with the Topo OS 1:50K maps.
I bought this to replace an old Magellan SporTrak colour, which still works well but is a lot slower than the new Garmin.
I use Quo mapping and the 65s does not import and export directly like the SporTrak but transfers waypoints etc. via a gpx file. Quite easy once you know that.
The same approach applies with Garmin’s Basecamp. Need to watch that Basecamp doesn’t re-calculate the route in SatNav mode for a car, I have been using the SatNav for a couple of years. Has done this even in hiking profile but I manged to reverse it back to direct routing.

Nice GPS. Spoilt by the poor PC/app interface

Nice unit, but I can’t bring myself to give it 5 stars because of the ridiculously complicated and poorly designed PC interface.

Can’t rate the 65s as I received (correctly) a GPSMap 66sr, so my rating of 3 is meaningless. The 66sr however is brilliant! (5 star) The two biggest things that impress me are accuracy of GPS (dual channel GNSS actually), speed of acquisition and battery life. Sealed-in non-replaceable battery is a very contentious issue, but due to the significantly longer battery life, the built-in option is best for me. Standard ‘clunky’ interface (been around for quite some years now) may throw some newer folk, but is actually very easy and configurable once you’ve spent some time with it. For the price, a lanyard would be nice, although does come with a carabiner which is probably preferred by most anyway. Having used both touch and button interface, I’m undecided. Touch for summer months and simple ease and speed, button for certainty of what you’ve selected and use in colder, inclement winter months, when gloved).

GPS is spot on and does everything I need of it. Initially it did give a message “Unable to authenticate maps” I contacted the seller and followed the guidance sent to me and the problem was quickly resolved. Can’t fault them.

It was delivered promptly, and you can’t really argue with the price. The device (GPSMAP 65s) seems to be very accurate, using GPS, Galileo and GLONASS satellites; outward and return tracks were in agreement to within about a metre. The user interface is easy to learn if you have used Garmin devices before.

Not used yet but it will be good and the price was very competitive.
