Outdoor GPS Shop – The experts view
The Garmin GPSMAP65 is a great budget button GPS unit from Garmin.
It is an updated version of the Garmin GPSMAP64 with multi-band/ multi-GNSS handheld with sensors. It also works alongside the Garmin Explore app so you can transfer routes/ tracks directly onto this unit without the use of a PC/ Mac.
Also with the addition of Garmin’s TOPO ACTIVE mapping (44 European countries), it is great for those wanting to venture further afield.
If you can afford it with the 1:50k Topo Great Britain Pro map card it is a great addition as you then get full GB Ordnance Survey maps on this unit.

1. What are each of the map options available with this unit?
– GPS Unit Only
The map page will be blank on this unit unless you put a map card in the unit, or you download some mapping using a Birdseye Plus voucher.
If you already have an Ordnance Survey map card (micro SD) from another Garmin GPS, you could put it in this unit.
– With Birdseye PLUS Voucher (25,000 sq km of 1:25k maps)
You activate the map credit against your Garmin account and then once you have this map credit in place you have one year to download your 25,000 sq km of 1:25k maps.
25,000 sq km is larger than the size of Wales and the area you choose can be split (i.e. you can choose areas from all over the country).
Don’t worry, if you buy the unit from Outdoor GPS Shop you will get a step by step guide of how to download this mapping.
– With TOPO Great Britain Pro 1:50k
This is full GB at 1:50k mapping on a map card, which sits in the back of the GPS unit.
The TOPO PRO means that it is the latest map card from Garmin, giving you off road turn by turn routing within the National Parks, this means you can select a location many miles ahead and the GPS will route you via the footpaths to get to that location (like a car sat nav does).
Outside National Parks the GPS will navigate you in a straight line from waypoint to waypoint.
Don’t worry, here at the Outdoor GPS Shop we set the unit up for you so you can easily use these features and we even include a quick start guide so you can quickly get up and running with your GPS unit.
2. Does this unit come with batteries?
No, but it just requires x2 AA batteries. We would recommend some good quality rechargeable batteries, as it will use a set every day.
3. What is the difference between the GPSMap 65 and 65x?
The GPSMap 65x includes a barometric altimeter, 3-axis compass and wireless connectivity.
