Description

Outdoor GPS Shop – The Experts View on this Unit

The Garmin eTrex 32x is a great four-season GPS from Garmin.

As you are spending a little more money than the Garmin eTrex 22x you now get the addition of an altimeter that works using the air pressure (making it more accurate).
The other key addition of an electronic compass, this gives you far greater accuracy at small movements and is a worthwhile addition to an outdoor GPS Unit.

The TopoActive mapping this GPS comes with as standard makes it ideal for those visiting Europe as well as walking/ cycling/ geocaching in the UK.

If you can afford the addition of some Ordnance Survey maps, it makes for a great GPS for walking in the UK as this will show you the rights of way.

As it is a button GPS unit it makes for a great four-season Outdoor GPS unit.

  • Support for GPS and GLONASS satellite systems allows for tracking in more challenging environments than GPS alone
  • 8 GB of internal memory for map downloads plus a microSD™ card slot
  • eTrex 32x adds a 3-axis compass and barometric altimeter
  • Battery life: up to 25 hours in GPS mode with 2 AA batteries

eTrex 22x and eTrex 32x offer the same ease-of-use, durability and affordability that the eTrex handheld GPS series is known for — along with preloaded TopoActive Europe maps. These devices are perfect for quad bikes, bicycles, boats or hiking.

Explore the terrain

The eTrex 22x and 32x handheld devices come preloaded with road-routable TopoActive Europe maps that feature streets and trails so you can take the journey off the grid. Now you can know your surroundings — such as waterways, natural features as well as buildings, international boundaries and more. You can also find thousands of points of interests, including shops, restaurants, universities, car parks and accommodations.

Keep your fix

The eTrex series uses both GPS and GLONASS satellite systems so the receiver has the ability to track in more challenging environments than GPS alone. eTrex 32x adds a 3-axis compass and barometric altimeter, making it easy for you to keep your bearings.

Add maps

With a microSD card slot and expanded 8 GB of internal memory, you can easily download additional maps for wherever the adventure takes you.

Find fun

eTrex 22x and eTrex 32x support paperless geocaching. Upload GPX files straight to your device, and view key information such as location, terrain and hints from Geocaching.com.

Go anywhere

With an array of compatible mounts, eTrex is designed as an outdoor handheld GPS ideal for use on quad bikes or bicycles, in boats or on foot. Use the auto mount capability and City Navigator® NT maps for turn-by-turn driving directions, or use the rugged mount for your motorcycle or quad bike. Wherever you think you might take eTrex, it has the mapping and mounts to get you there.

FAQs

1. What are each of the map options available with this unit?

Garmin TOPO ACTIVE Maps

Garmin TOPO ACTIVE mapping is a proper digital map, as you zoom in you get more information and as you zoom out you get less. BUT, it is not an Ordnance Survey map, therefore it does not differentiate between Bridleways and Footpaths, it just marks them as paths.

It covers 47 European countries, compiled using the community-generated OpenStreetMap (OSM) database.

With TOPO Great Britain Pro 1:50k

This is full GB at 1:50k mapping on a map card, which sits in the back of the GPS unit.

The TOPO PRO means that it is the latest map card from Garmin, giving you off road turn by turn routing within the National Parks, this means you can select a location many miles ahead and the GPS will route you via the footpaths to get to that location (like a car sat nav does).

Outside National Parks the GPS will navigate you in a straight line from waypoint to waypoint.

Don’t worry, here at the Outdoor GPS Shop we set the unit up for you so you can easily use these features and we even include a quick start guide so you can quickly get up and running with your GPS unit.

2. Does this unit come with batteries?

No, but it just requires x2 AA batteries. We would recommend some good quality rechargeable batteries, as it will use a set every day.

3. What is the difference between the eTrex 22x and 32x?

eTrex 32x adds a 3-axis compass and barometric altimeter

I had an eTrex 10 for a number of years, which served me well. I upgraded to this unit to get a colour screen and also so I could get some Ordnance Survey maps to tie in with the 1:25k maps that I normally walk with.

It’s a cracking little unit and very pleased with it, as well as the benefits of the colour screen I really like the electronic compass which orientates the map the way you are pointing, a great addition for the accuracy when making small movements.

Very pleased with it and really found the instructions I received with the unit from the Outdoor GPS Shop very useful, to be honest, I would have struggled to download the mapping without them, thanks guys, great service.

Ordered this unit on Thursday and it arrived on Friday, you can’t get better than that, thanks.

Having the unit set up was not expected but it is already giving me the information I want, a few of my friends with the same GPS have really struggled to get this unit set up and give them even a grid reference, but mine has come out of the box already with that info.

Heading out today with it, so i will let you know how I get on. So far, so good!

After speaking to John… this is the one… it sure is. Ever since it arrived I have had it on me for extreme ultra marthon training so I know it is there in my pocket. After a day or two of learning what it offers (many handy features) I can safely say it is brilliant. I have edited the menu’s to just have what I need, really easy to add GPS tracks to follow, easy to add a waypoint. Although I have the Garmin Fenix 6X watch for my training info and a map, the hand held is super handy for seeing the area around or looking safely while running. Nice clear screen and the button version is a step forward for bad weather, gloves and storing in your pocket while running. Their was another GPS which was double the price but only 16hrs of battery… 25hrs with a good set of batteries is peace of mind on a race through the night. The weight, size, added 1:50k GB map means I can switch it on, have it ready for looking at a map in detail quickly… what else is needed? to run fast and crack on. I give this piece equipment 10/10. The service is 11/10, an extra mark for being very helpful and sorting the delivery next day. Did I mention the eTrex 32X is rock solid build quality? It is, I added a screen protector from Amazon for a few quid even through it has gorilla glass and a detachable lanyard to tie the GPS to my hydration vest while putting the GPS in a side pocket. Anyone doing an extreme ultra, buy it.

Really pleased with my purchase. Came very promptly in the post and had been set up with map card good to go. Garmin’s own instructions are a bit naff, and it took a few goes to figure out getting navigation files on to the device from the internet/my computer (and I am sure it wouldn’t have if I had thought to use the GPS training online resource) but the piece of equipment itself is great. I have used it both for my bike, mounted on the cable tied garmin mount, and had it in the bag as an additional aid when out walking. The fact it is not touch screen is actually a bonus as it makes it much easier to use with gloves without getting cold hands. The battery life is good and I find it much more convenient to be able to run removable rechargeable AA batteries as this means I can carry spares on longer trips in the future.

Bought as a present for a family member as I already have this device. Arrived set up and ready to go with the map card already in the device. Family member pleased with it and has managed to get it to communicate with his computer without too much difficulty – although the Garmin computer software Basecamp seems to be slow and clunky.

Received next morning by Royal Mail special delivery. Set up and ready to go.
Included was a brief guide to use and a detailed guide to installing Birdseye maps. It’s important to read every word and follow this precisely. It does eventually work and the 25,000 maps are virtually the same as OS Explorer.
The screen is a bit small but the maps are digital so can easily be enlarged.
The combination of a toggle and six buttons needs some practice.
Worth rearranging the order in which screens appear to speed up use.
Very quick to pick up satellites and location.
Worth downloading the complete Owners Manual from the web.

The service from Outdoor GPS shop was excellent. Especially the advice and the openness regarding costings.

I could have bought it cheaper elsewhere but the service was worth every penny of the difference. These people care about what they sell you – they are not box shifters and delivery was very fast.

The 32x is a lovely machine, clear graphics and quick enough. I wouldn’t describe it as entry level its better than that but I believe is very good value for money and does what I need it to do for relatively short walks and saves lots of looking at maps once I’ve plotted my route

Very happy with the size and functionality. Would recommend as I don’t want to be carrying around a huge GPSMap 60 series. It fits into my hand better than the etrex Legend I have had for 12 years and the topo maps are good.

It’s just that when I updated the maps on the Garmin website (an automatic update) I then had to go and buy a micro SD card as there wasn’t enough memory for the basic topo europe maps upgrade that it came supplied with . Garmin please increase the memory size 8Gb isn’t enough for the maps you supply it with.

Otherwise happy with it. If you buy one with topo Europe includes make sure you buy a micro sd card for the automatic upgrade when you plug it in.

Very satisfied with the 32X, I purchased it with intention of adding UK OS map set at later date, the included Garmin map is useful but not detailed enough for me, there is a link provided for free update to a newer Garmin map set but I have yet to try linking the unit to my computer and trying to download for which there is a caution about the time such a download might take, I intend to try doing so cautiously once I am more conversant with installed features and use.
