FAQs
-
What are each of the map options available with this unit?
– Garmin TOPO ACTIVE Maps
Garmin TOPO ACTIVE mapping is a proper digital map, as you zoom in you get more information and as you zoom out you get less. BUT, it is not an Ordnance Survey map, therefore it does not differentiate between Bridleways and Footpaths, it just marks them as paths.
It covers 47 European countries, compiled using the community-generated OpenStreetMap (OSM) database.
– With TOPO Great Britain Pro 1:50k
This is full GB at 1:50k mapping on a map card, which sits in the back of the GPS unit.
The TOPO PRO means that it is the latest map card from Garmin, giving you off road turn by turn routing within the National Parks, this means you can select a location many miles ahead and the GPS will route you via the footpaths to get to that location (like a car sat nav does).
Outside National Parks the GPS will navigate you in a straight line from waypoint to waypoint.
Don’t worry, here at the Outdoor GPS Shop we set the unit up for you so you can easily use these features and we even include a quick start guide so you can quickly get up and running with your GPS unit.
2. Does this unit come with batteries?
No, but it just requires x2 AA batteries. We would recommend some good quality rechargeable batteries, as it will use a set every day.
3. What is the difference between the eTrex 22x and 32x?
eTrex 32x adds a 3-axis compass and barometric altimeter

Katherine McDonald –
We walk every week with our local rambling group and bought this GPS a couple of months ago to record our walks and so we could see how far we had walked etc.
Cracking little unit, I did not want anything to complicated and this is exactly that, the maps are not Ordnance Survey but they are adequate for what we are using it for.
Battery life is great, we are getting a couple of walks out of each set and it just lives in our pocket whist out walking.
A great easy to use GPS unit which thankfully did not cost a furtune.
Kieth Freeman –
This is an excellent little GPS receiver.
It isn’t flashy. It isn’t a touch screen. It’s small, so it doesn’t show a huge amount of mapping.
It works well in the rain. It works well in bright sunlight. It works well when you have to wear thick gloves.
In fact, it works well in all conditions and continues to work well when your average smart phone ran out of battery power hours ago.
Pleased with the performance to date.

Initially this may come across as slightly retro, but in use it’s a very effective device. So far I’ve used it for country walks, but I’ll be happy to have it with me on the hills in winter.
Excellent service from Outdoor GPS; a competitive price and quick delivery, plus they checked the unit, ensured the software was up-to-date, and included additional info/advice.

Great device but tedious to register and manual difficult to find your way around.

Smaller than expected, so screen a bit difficult to follow when cycling. Also. I’ve not yet found how to get map in window to change as I progress along track, so I keep having to stop to adjust. Particular issue when zoomed in to check route, so frequent stops needed. Have resorted to using OS Maps on iPhone which rather defeated the aim of getting eTrex.
