Outdoor GPS Shop – The Experts View on this Unit

The Garmin eTrex 10 is the base model GPS from Garmin.

If you are only wanting a GPS to give you a grid reference, tell you how far you have walked etc and also give you the option to do a trackback (retrace your steps) it very much meets your requirements.

As it has a black & white screen it has great battery life, running on 2 x AA batteries.

As it is a button GPS unit it makes for a great four-season Outdoor GPS unit.

Only Garmin could make the eTrex better

The new eTrex 10 retains the core functionality, rugged construction, affordability and long battery life that made eTrex the most dependable GPS device available. We improved the user interface and added a worldwide basemap, paperless geocaching and added support for spine mounting accessories. You’ll recognise the name. You’ll recognise the quality. But the eTrex 10 is an entirely new device – a device that only Garmin could offer.

See The Way

eTrex 10 has an enhanced 2.2 in monochrome display that’s easy to read in any lighting situation. Its easy-to-use interface means you’ll spend more time enjoying the outdoors and less time searching for information. Both durable and waterproof, eTrex 10 features the legendary toughness that’s built to withstand the elements – be it dust, dirt, humidity or water, none of which are a match for this legendary navigator.

Find Fun

eTrex 10 features paperless geocaching by supporting GPX files for downloading geocaches and details straight to your unit. Visit to start your geocaching adventure. By going paperless, you’re not only helping the environment but also making your geocaching more fun.

eTrex 10 stores and displays all the information you need, including location, terrain, difficulty, hints and descriptions, which means no more manually entering coordinates and paper print outs. Simply upload the geocache to your unit and start hunting for caches.

Keep Your Fix

With its high-sensitivity, EGNOS-enabled GPS receiver and HotFix® satellite prediction, eTrex 10 locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover and deep canyons. The advantage is clear — whether you’re in deep woods or just near tall buildings and trees, you can count on eTrex 10 to help you find your way when you need it the most.

Go Global

The new eTrex series is the first-ever consumer-grade receivers that can track both GPS and GLONASS satellites simultaneously. GLONASS is a system developed by the Russian Federation that will be fully operational in 2012. When using GLONASS satellites, the time it takes for the receiver to “lock on” to a position is (on average) approximately 20 percent faster than using GPS. And when using both GPS and GLONASS, the receiver has the ability to lock on to 24 more satellites than using GPS alone.

A great GPS device. It lasts ages on a set of batteries.

There is no belt clip. You have to buy that as an extra.

What is good about it? It is small, light, waterproof, uses readily available AA batteries, and you can work it with gloves on.

You can’t go wrong for the money.

When used in conjuction with a map if using pre planned hiking routes this is marvellous. It is easy to carry and light. I value the way it pinpoints where I am on screen in conjunction with the route that shows as a black track on light background. It is easy to see in sunlight too. Much better than any mobile I have used. It doesnt show detailed maps but for me this is a bonus as on this small screen, that could distract me too much and confuse things.I have the map to give me the big picture. The trip odometer is great for checking distnace covered and average speed etc…even an estimated time of arrival..(make sure you are moving when looking at that or it suddenly increases because it thinks you are not making forward progress …) A wonderful piece of kit. So much so, I have gained much more confidence in hiking alone in areas without a phone signal & minimal reference points. So next on my list is a personal loactor beacon. Just in case.

Very accurate, even under heavy tree cover, finds a good signal v quickly.

A bit smaller than I’d like.

However, it is reasonably priced and great value at the price.

You will definitely need a memory card, I plugged in to update and got a 98% full warning. It does take a good sized card though so that’s easily taken care of.

It also needs a clip or lanyard

Great service, it arrived the next day. Just what I needed, a nice compact GPS unit that gives me my grid reference.

Seems to work good. This is a bare bones GPS which is good for me since I am not computer savvy. I pretty much use it only to get my grid reference and then I locate myself on my OS map. It also draws a line on the screen to show you the route you walked and tracks the distance that you walked. A tidy unit and does the job for me.

Wanted a basic model to pin point where I am incase the weather closes in. I always use a map and compass, but bought this as a safety tool. This does exactly what I need, quickly gives a grid ref and I can find my bearings. Handy having it all set up ready to.

This satnav is great value for money. Best of all the TracBack function is a potential life saver allowing you to fully retrace your steps if you are caught in fog or whiteout or just a bit lost. The Ultimate Navigation Manual by Lyle Brotherton gives by far the best guide to using a satnav, and, of course, map and compass. Finally, search for Lyle Brotherton TracBack on YouTube for the best visual guide to TracBack.

Havnt been able to go outside to try it yet but it looks sturdy enough and will take a wee while to get used to as it is a bit more technical than the geko I had before

Manual made a lot of assumptions that you know what your doing, even the download manual was not any better and missed out steps to follow. Managed to get there eventually, more by randomly pressing buttons.
