You could but you may prefer to store it in the Oregon & new eTrex carrying case. This carry case  is made for when outdoors and using your GPS unit. It will protect the screen and unit from scratches and damage.

2 – Can I attach it to myself if I do decide to use it whilst out walking?

Yes, as this carrying case comes with a belt clip.
