Garmin GPSMAP H1 – 1 Week On
Share
It’s been a week since we got our hands on the brand-new Garmin GPSMAP H1, and we’ve had plenty of time to put it through its paces. Here’s how it’s shaping up after the first seven days.
First Impressions
Straight out of the box, the H1 feels familiar if you’ve ever used the GPSMAP range before — tough, solid, and ready for the outdoors. The screen is sharper than expected, and the menu layout feels that bit snappier compared to older models. Garmin has clearly worked on speed and clarity, which makes day-to-day use more enjoyable.
Performance on the Trail
We’ve tested it on a few long walks and bike rides, and the H1 locks onto satellites quickly. Even in tree cover or deep valleys, the reception has stayed reliable. The new processor gives smoother map redraws, so when you’re zooming or panning around, it’s noticeably quicker than the 66 and 67 series.
Battery Life
One of the standout points so far is the battery. After a week of mixed use — a couple of big walks, some shorter test runs, and a fair bit of menu playing — it’s clear that Garmin’s claims of extended life aren’t just marketing fluff. It comfortably holds up for a full weekend without charging, which is a big plus.
Usability
The buttons feel firm and responsive, and although the device is still a chunky handheld (as the GPSMAPs always are), the balance is right. The menus are intuitive enough that you don’t have to reach for the manual every five minutes — something first-time GPSMAP users will appreciate.
Early Verdict
After a week, the GPSMAP H1 looks like a worthy successor in the GPSMAP line. It’s fast, reliable, and the battery performance is excellent. It’s not a flashy device — but then it’s not meant to be. It’s a rugged tool built for people who want accuracy and dependability when they’re off the beaten track.
If you’re already on a GPSMAP 66 or GPSMAP 67, the upgrade is worth thinking about for the speed alone. And if you’ve been holding off for the “right” time to buy, this feels like Garmin has got it right.
We personally believe the Garmin GPSMAP H1 has now stolen the mantle from the Garmin GPSMAP 67 as the best top end GPS unit on the market. With the Garmin GPSMAP H1 now having both a touch screen and buttons it it truly the best four season Outdoor GPS unit, making it fit for all seasons.
