The Best Outdoor GPS Unit (2026 Update)

The Best Outdoor GPS Unit (2026 Update)

If you’re looking for the best outdoor GPS unit, there’s one name that has dominated for nearly a decade… and one brand-new model that now takes things to another level.

Let’s start with a bit of context.

The GPSMAP Legacy – 7 Years at the Top

For years, the Garmin GPSMAP 66s set the benchmark when it launched in 2018.

It was reliable, accurate, and built like a tank. Quite simply, it became the go-to choice for walkers, hikers, and professionals.

Then came the updates:

  • Garmin GPSMAP 66sr (2020) – improved accuracy and battery
  • Garmin GPSMAP 67 (2023) – better battery life and performance

Each version refined the formula, but fundamentally… they all felt quite similar.

That’s not a criticism. Garmin had a winning product and stuck with it.

But then something changed.

A New Era – Enter the GPSMAP H1

The Garmin GPSMAP H1 is not just another upgrade.

In my view, it’s the first real rethink of a handheld GPS in years.

Garmin have moved away from the old “button-heavy, menu-heavy” style and created something that feels far more natural to use.

And that matters more than most people realise.

First Impressions – Built for the Outdoors

Straight away, the H1 feels like a premium bit of kit.

It’s:

  • Solid in the hand
  • Slightly slimmer than older models
  • Clearly designed for proper outdoor use

This isn’t something delicate or over-designed. It still feels like a tool, not a toy.

Garmin have also updated the mounting system. It’s new, so older accessories won’t fit, but honestly, that’s probably overdue. The old mounts were never perfect.

The Big Upgrade – Screen & Ease of Use

This is where the H1 really pulls ahead.

The larger 3.5-inch touchscreen is a big step forward. It’s:

  • Bright
  • Easy to read in daylight
  • Works with gloves

But more importantly… it’s easier to use.

You can swipe, tap, and move around the menus much more naturally. It feels closer to using a phone, without losing the reliability of a GPS unit.

If you prefer buttons, they’re still there. So you get the best of both worlds.

👉 In my opinion, this is the biggest improvement Garmin have made in years.

Navigation – Simple, Finally

Older GPS units could feel a bit clunky.

Different menus for routes, tracks, recording… it wasn’t always obvious.

The H1 simplifies everything:

  • Load your route
  • Start walking
  • Follow the line

That’s it.

It records your walk automatically and keeps everything in one place. At the end, you save it and you’re done.

For most people, that’s exactly how it should work.

Mapping – What You Need to Know

The H1 comes with built-in mapping, which is fine for general use.

But if you’re walking in the UK, I’ll be honest:

👉 You’ll still want Ordnance Survey maps.

They show:

  • Public footpaths
  • Bridleways
  • Field boundaries
  • Access land

Without them, you’re missing a big part of the picture.

The good news is the H1 supports the same OS mapping options as previous models, so it’s easy to upgrade.

Battery Life – Still Strong

Battery life is slightly lower than older models on paper, but in reality:

  • It still lasts for multi-day trips
  • It’s more than enough for most walkers
  • USB-C charging is a welcome upgrade

You’re trading a bit of battery for a much better screen and faster performance, which feels like the right decision.

Extra Features (That You’ll Actually Use)

Garmin haven’t gone overboard, but there are some genuinely useful additions:

  • Built-in torch
  • Quick action button (customisable)
  • Emergency siren
  • Easy phone syncing

Nothing gimmicky. Just practical features that make sense outdoors.

So… Is This the Best Outdoor GPS Unit?

In short: yes.

The Garmin GPSMAP H1 is, in my opinion, the best handheld GPS unit currently available.

Not because it’s packed with more features than anything else…

…but because it’s finally easy to use.

That’s what Garmin got right this time.

Should You Upgrade?

  • If you’re new to GPS units → this is the one to buy
  • If you’ve got an older GPSMAP → this will feel like a big step forward
  • If you’re happy with your current unit → you can wait, but you’ll notice the difference

Final Thoughts

For years, the GPSMAP range has been the safe choice.

Reliable. Proven. Solid.

But the H1 moves things on.

It keeps everything that worked… and fixes what didn’t.

👉 And that’s why, right now, it’s the best outdoor GPS unit on the market.
